There are plenty of myths and misconceptions about Instant Coffee. Let’s dive in and set the record straight! THE MYTHS Quality Myth: Instant Coffee is low qualityFact: Not when made with premium, speciality grade beans! While it’s true that many mass-market brands use cheaper, lower-quality beans (sometimes even broken, old or leftover from other production lines), we take a completely different approach. At TrueStart we ensure all of our Instant Coffee is made with speciality grade beans. Taste Myth: All Instant Coffee has a bitter and burned tasteFact: Not necessarily - not to be biased but TrueStart Instant Coffee tastes absolutely delicious! The harsh, bitter taste in many Instant Coffees comes from over-roasting beans at extremely high temperatures, with little attention to flavour. Some brands even add artificial coffee flavourings or extracts to mask it. We do things differently.. we air roast our beans slowly for an even, balanced flavour and we never dark roast our coffee! So every cup is smooth, rich and naturally delicious. Caffeine Myth: Instant Coffee has less caffeineFact: Instant Coffee only has slightly less caffeine per cup than fresh coffee - in fact all of our Instant Coffee is fully caffeine-controlled.  We have been testing each batch for over a decade to ensure how much caffeine you drink per serve. Antioxidants Myth: Instant Coffee doesn’t contain antioxidants compared to fresh coffeeFact: Studies show that Instant Coffee is super rich in antioxidants, such as chlorogenic acid and polyphenols, similar to fresh coffee. (2,3)  These antioxidants specifically protect us from key oxidative stress biomarkers (4) which in short, reduces your signs of aging and protects your body against degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's. So your new favourite cup of Instant coffee isn’t just tasty & easy to make - it’s good for you too. Chemicals: Acrylamide Myth: Instant Coffee contains dangerous levels of chemicals such as acrylamide.Fact: You would have to drink 10+ cups of coffee a day to reach the lower limit of acrylamide potentially being dangerous for you.  What is it? Acrylamide is a chemical that can form in foods cooked at high temperatures like toast, chips, and when you roast all coffee. Whilst very large amounts can cause harm, the small amounts found in everyday foods are low risk (6) So, when is Instant Coffee bad for you? Made from poor quality, old and discarded beans If it has anything artificial added to it other than pure coffee. Many flavored Instant Coffees include added sugar, artificial sweeteners, dried milk solids, and non-dairy creamers.. a nightmare for your gut Roasting at high temperatures and spray drying increases the acrylamide levels in Instant Coffee (although this is still low), ruins the taste and is more likely to cause gastrointestinal issues like heartburn and digestive problems Healthy Instant Coffee - Only the good stuff So to summarise, the best Instant Coffee should come from the best quality coffee bean and contain as few ingredients as possible. We want you to get to know our awesome Impact Partner: Magic Breakfast. So we sat down with them to ask them a few questions to help you get to know them better! Let's dive in.. Let's start at the beginning. For those who may not know much about Magic Breakfast, can you tell us a bit about the charity’s mission and the impact it’s aiming to make?  Magic Breakfast is the UK’s leading school breakfast charity dedicated to championing and providing nourishing school breakfasts to help children and young people learn and thrive. Children and young people should be hungry to learn, but 2.1 million children in the UK are at risk of hunger. That’s four pupils in every class of 30. We aim to champion and provide nourishing breakfasts that help children and young people. It costs Magic Breakfast just 34p to provide a delicious, nutritious breakfast to children and young people. Who does Magic Breakfast support/help? Magic Breakfast makes a difference to over 350,000 children and young people every day. We support schools in England and Scotland, and work with local authorities to feed children and help end child morning hunger for good. We work with primary, secondary, additional support for learning schools (Scotland), special educational needs schools (England) and pupil referral units (Scotland). From our Annual Breakfast Survey (2025) we found that 94% of schools agree that Magic Breakfast positively impacts pupils' readiness to learn. What's happening at Magic Breakfast right now that makes you feel excited or hopeful?  A daily breakfast helps pupils feel included, equal, and focused. Alongside our support in schools, Magic Breakfast drives long-term change through research, campaigning, and advocacy. We work with policymakers and partners to end morning hunger for good and create a future where every child is nourished, empowered, and thriving. We're transforming lives one breakfast, and one moment of connection, at a time. Magic Breakfast cannot eliminate child morning hunger alone. Real, lasting change will take all of us working together. Is there a story or moment from the past few months that you'd like to share? Yes! We encourage our schools to engage in our yearly breakfast survey report, in which they can share feedback on their experiences with us. This quote, from one of our partner schools in Brighton and Hove, really stands out in showing the impact of our work. “We introduced breakfast club to a child whose attendance, self-esteem, and social skills were poor and who was refusing to come to school. This child has been struggling with his health and weight and didn't trust his peers or adults in general. I had a meeting with his Mum, and we decided he would try breakfast club so we could help him socialise with other peers in small groups, and doing the activities would help with his weight. Mum discussed his poor eating habits and the lack of healthy choices he would make. i.e. eat at McDonald’s for breakfast. This child now attends breakfast club daily, eats what healthy foods we provide, and has made new friendships which has made a massive impact in class mum can now go to work feeling relieved and knowing that she won't get a phone call due to him not being happy in school.” – Magic Breakfast Partner School, Brighton and Hove What challenges are you facing right now, and how are you finding your way through them? The Government’s policy of free school breakfasts for all primary-aged children in England is a welcome step forward. Scotland has made a similar commitment, with plans for a breakfast club in every primary and additional support needs school. These signals of progress show that the system is beginning to change. However, significant gaps remain. Older pupils in the most disadvantaged secondary schools, as well as the youngest children in nursery and early years settings, are still at risk of starting the day hungry. Hunger does not begin at age five, nor does it end at age 11.   This moment of change demands that Magic Breakfast evolves too. As public policy shifts so must our role within the system. That brings uncertainty, that we will approach with intentionality and purpose. Rather than rushing to define a fixed course of action, we are choosing to pause, listen, and learn. We are looking outward and committing to being genuinely led by children and young people themselves. A Chat with Rachel Ashe from Mental Health Swims We caught up with Rachel Ashe, the amazing founder of our partner Mental Health Swims (MHS) - an award-winning, mental health peer support community who host free, safe and inclusive swim meet ups nationwide. What began as Rachel’s way to boost her own mental health has grown into 100+ outdoor swims across the UK, and is now expanding indoors to leisure centres too. Here’s what Rachel had to say - from why it all started, what keeps her hopeful, and how you can dive in (literally or figuratively) to get involved..Let’s start at the beginning. What inspired you to create Mental Health Swims? I live with a mental illness myself and in 2018, I was really unwell. I wasn't managing to go to work or anything. In my mission to re-enter the world, I was searching for community - but a lot of the communities I came across were support groups. They were normally indoors, where you’d sit on a chair in a circle - and that just felt really scary to me and not the kind of space that felt right. It felt like pressure. I’ve always found it easier to talk while doing something else. I adopted a dog, which really helped, and I started going on lots of walks, but I also tried swimming outdoors.Of all the things I did to support my mental health, that was the one that made a massive difference. It had this hugely powerful effect on the way that I felt in my mind. And that was the beginning.  What makes Mental Health Swims different from other swim groups?I wanted to create that space for other people - the kind of community I was looking for. A place where we could get together, do something active, something outdoors. A space where we could connect with nature, with our community and with ourselves. And I brought with me that lived experience and understanding of just how hard it can be to come along and join a group. What makes us unique at Mental Health Swims is our approach to the whole user journey - making it as easy as possible for people who find it difficult to join. So, who do you support?First of all, Mental Health Swims supports adults. Some of the people we support might have a diagnosis of a mental illness, but others simply know within themselves that mental health is something they struggle with. We particularly want to reach those who feel isolated.  It's a really wonderful thing to feel seen, heard and understood. That kind of connection can have a transformational effect on your life. There's a whole spectrum of mental health experiences, and we welcome people from all sorts of backgrounds and different walks of life. What’s happening at MHS right now that makes you feel excited or hopeful? So many things! One of the big ones is our Swim Together indoor programme. We piloted it in 2023, and it was really successful, so we’re now rolling it out more widely. We’ve got a few swims running in England, one in Wales, and another starting soon in Scotland - so we ‘re really expanding our indoor pool offer. It’s a whole new landscape for us, working with leisure centres and healthcare providers, which is challenging but also really exciting. We’ve also just welcomed a new board member, and we’re in the process of hiring a fundraiser. That might not sound exciting to everyone - but for us, it’s huge. It means we can grow, do more, and better support our volunteers and swimmers. Has there been a recent moment or story that’s really stuck with you? Yes - we held an event in Parliament this year during Mental Health Awareness week. Lots of people attended, including other mental health charities we work with, MPs, some of our amazing swimmers and volunteers. As part of the event, we screened a short version of a really beautiful film we’ve been working on. We’re hoping to launch the full version later this year. I also visited our swim at West Reservoir in London. It was one of those magical, inspiring, brilliant days - just really special. I had the best time spending it with some of our hosts and our swimmers and the people who Mental Health Swims benefits.  One of our amazing swimmers in Hackney shared with me that she’d never felt like that space was for her. She said it seemed very middle class, that everyone would be in wetsuits and it just wouldn’t be a welcoming space. But when she saw the Mental Health Swims advert, she decided to give it a go. And now? It’s become a space she loves - a space where she connects with others in the community and gets to enjoy a swim.  It’s stories like that which just make me feel like we’re doing the right thing. And that’s just one of many. What’s the best way for people to get involved or support you?There are so many ways to get involved! You could become a swim host and host a group in your area, or maybe you have an amazing skill that could support the Mental Health Swims team. If you think, actually, I could volunteer some of my time, then please get in touch - we’d love to hear from you.  You can also just come along to a swim, meet other people, and become part of our community.  Or maybe you have pots of money and want to support us - you’re very welcome to! We’re always open to donations. Looking ahead — what’s your big dream for the next year? We’d love to host an in-person gathering for all our swim hosts - bringing everyone together would be really special. We’re also planning to screen our new film, which would be such a lovely way to celebrate and grow our community. There are also some behind-the-scenes goals, like securing more core funding. And of course, we want to keep growing our Swim Together project and continue nurturing our outdoor swims - just doing more of what we do so well.  If you could say one thing to everyone reading this, what would it be? If there’s something in the world you’re searching for and you can’t find it - maybe you’re the person to create it. I didn’t study business or plan to start a social enterprise. I just had an idea and some lived experience. And sometimes, that’s enough. We need more people using their lived experience to make meaningful change in the world. As the buzz builds for this Sunday’s London Marathon, we’re proud to share a story from one of our incredible ambassadors, Jonathan Escalante-Phillips - a teacher, runner, and first-time marathoner. Eight months ago, I started building towards a new challenge: my first ever marathon. I’ve been running for 15 years - mostly 5Ks and half marathons - and while high mileage isn’t new to me, the structure and scale of marathon training have brought something different. It’s been about consistency, recovery, and finding routines that stick. Living in Cambridge and working as a teacher, life is busy. I run-commute to and from school most days, which has helped me get in my training without needing to carve out too much extra time. That rhythm - run, teach, recover - has shaped my days, and having a few non-negotiables in place has made all the difference. One of those has been coffee. For the last eight months, I’ve been supported by TrueStart, and their Energising Colombian has become a small but important part of my morning routine. We often get asked, “Does this mean you’re Fairtrade / Organic?” or “How is B Corp different from other certifications?” So, let’s break it down and explain why B Corp matters, not just to us, but to businesses and customers everywhere.   What Is a B Corp? The B Corp movement began in 2006 with the formation of B Lab, a non-profit organisation that certifies companies based on rigorous standards for sustainability, social impact, and corporate governance. To become a B Corp, a company must meet high standards of social and environmental responsibility. Unlike other certifications that focus on a single product or area of business, B Corp evaluates the entire company - how we operate, how we treat our employees, our impact on the environment, and how we engage with our community. Companies undergo a rigorous assessment by B Lab, where they must prove they are making a genuine, measurable positive impact in all aspects of their business. It’s not just a stamp on a label - it’s a commitment to continuous improvement and accountability. This assessment is split into 5 sections: Governance, Workers, Community,  Environment, and Customers - companies must score at least 80 points to become a B Corp. TrueStart, upon our first certification scored a whopping 99.6! B Corp vs. Fairtrade vs. Organic – What’s the Difference? We get this question a lot! While all three focus on ethical and sustainable practices, they measure different things: ✅ Fairtrade – Ensures fair wages and working conditions for farmers and workers in developing countries but doesn’t look at the company as a whole. ✅ Organic – Focuses on farming practices, meaning products are grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilisers. However, it doesn’t necessarily mean fair wages or sustainable packaging. ✅ B Corp – Covers everything - ethical sourcing, sustainability, fair treatment of workers, social impact, and responsible business practices. It’s the most comprehensive, holistic certification that evaluates the entire business, not just one aspect. The Growing B Corp Movement B Corp is more than just a certification, it’s a community of forward-thinking businesses that believe in balancing profit with purpose. The movement is growing fast, with over 7,000 certified B Corps worldwide, including well-known brands like Patagonia, Ben & Jerry’s, Tony’s Chocolonely, and Danone. You may often here us talking about 'speciality grade coffee' but what is specialty grade coffee? Where does TrueStart score? What does it all mean? This blog will hopefully break that down into easy to read chunks but as ever, if you have any questions we're only an email away! Let's dive in.. What is Specialty Grade Coffee? Specialty coffee is a term for the highest grade of coffee available the SCA (Speciality Coffee Association) created a system to give coffee a score out of 100. To be classed as speciality, a coffee must score at least 80/100 and all of our coffees score 82 or higher. How do each of our coffees score? The people that score the coffee are called "Q-graders" and below we've got a couple of examples as to how our Colombian & Brazilian coffee has scored in a grading this week (20th Sept 2024). Energising Colombian: 84.25 / 100 Tasting Notes: Blackcurrant, vanilla, chocolatey. A smooth & juicy coffee. Bright-Eyed Brazilian: 83.5 / 100 Tasting Notes: Apple, sweet nut, caramel. A round, smooth & mellow coffee. Every single small-batch we roast is graded by a Q grader, ensuring that the coffee you make at home is top quality & absolutely delicious. What does this all mean? In short, the score itself just dictates that we sit in the specialty coffee band, which means you get a high quality coffee at home every single time and this way you know that we're supplying you with consistently epic coffee! At the end of the day though, you have to love the taste personally and that's more important than any score.

Don't sleep on our Decaf.. When most people think of coffee, they think of a caffeinated kickstart to the day, but Decaf is a fantastic option if you love the taste of coffee but want to cut back on caffeine. It still offers the same rich flavour and several benefits of regular coffee, and at TrueStart, we believe Decaf deserves just as much love! So, What Exactly is Decaf Coffee? Decaf coffee is made from coffee beans, just like your regular brew, but with the caffeine removed. The decaffeination process happens before roasting, and here at TrueStart we use all natural methods to decaffeinate our coffee such as the Swiss Water Method for our Fresh Coffee, we use this process for both our Brazilian Decaf & our Mexican Decaf. This is a completely chemical free process, where the coffee beans are soaked in water to remove caffeine and a filtration system extracts the caffeine. The beans are then reintroduced to the original water to reabsorb the flavour compounds - minus the caffeine!However, as the Swiss Water Method is not commercially or environmentally viable for any instant coffee, we use a food-grade organic solvent derived from algae to decaffeinate our Instant Coffee. This means you get a clean cup of coffee with all the goodness, and none of the caffeine! Benefits of Decaf Coffee: Just because it’s missing the caffeine doesn’t mean it’s missing the benefits. So, what can I make? Let's dive in to some recipes.. AeroPress: The Quick and Versatile Champion The AeroPress is a fantastic little gadget that brews up a delicious, smooth cup of coffee in just a couple of minutes. Just add your ground coffee, pour in hot water, give it a good stir, and press down—voilà! It’s perfect for those mornings when you need a tasty cup ASAP! What You Need: AeroPress Omnigrind coffee Hot water (around 93°C) Stirrer (we use the humble teaspoon!) Instructions: Prep Your AeroPress: Place a paper filter in the cap and rinse with hot water. Assemble: Put the AeroPress on your mug. Add Coffee: Use 1-2 scoops (about 15-20 grams or 3-4 tablespoons) of your TrueStart ground of choice.  Add Water: Pour hot water up to the top of the AeroPress. Stir and Steep: Stir for about 10 seconds, then let it steep for 30 seconds. Plunge: Slowly press down the plunger. Enjoy! Delicious and ready to go!  French Press: The Classic and Bold A French press, or cafetiére, makes a robust and full-bodied brew. It takes a little more time, but the reward for your patience is totally worth the wait!  What You Need: French Press Fresh Ground Coffee Hot water (around 93°C) Stirrer (...a good ol’ spoon!) Instructions: Prep Your French Press: Rinse with hot water to warm it up. Add Coffee: Use 1:15 coffee to water ratio (about 30 grams or 3 heaped tablespoons of coffee for 450 ml of water). Add Water: Pour hot water over the coffee grounds. Stir and Steep: Stir gently, then place the lid on with the plunger pulled up. Let it steep for 4 minutes. Plunge: Slowly press down the plunger. Serve and Savor! Pour into your favorite mug and enjoy! Drip Coffee: The Everyday Hero The drip coffee maker is a favourite in many homes and businesses. Add Coffee: Use 1-2 tablespoons of ground coffee per 180ml of water (or per cup). Add Water: Fill the reservoir with water. Brew: Turn on the machine and let it do its thing. Pour and Enjoy! When it’s ready, grab yourself a nice big cup. Pour Over: The Artisanal Brew The pour-over method is all about precision and patience, resulting in a clean, complex cup of coffee. What You Need: Pour Over Dripper (like a V60) Filter TrueStart Ground Coffee Hot water (around 93°C) Top Tip: If you want to push the boat out, use a gooseneck kettle for precision Instructions: Prep Your Dripper: Place a filter in the dripper and rinse with hot water. We are buzzing to announce our partnership with Mental Health Swims! We've admired the work this incredible community does and to be able to be a part of it is an honour. A huge thank you to Rachel and her team for having us involved; we can't wait to see the impact our support has and, of course, seeing the dippers enjoying their TrueStart by the water. Who are Mental Health Swims and what do they do? It can be really intimidating joining a new group, especially when you are experiencing mental health issues. This was certainly true for founder of Mental Health Swims, Rachel Ashe. In 2019 after a period of mental ill health Rachel was looking for ways to connect with others. When she couldn't find what she was looking for she started an outdoor dipping group in Swansea where she lives. This one small group turned into the nationwide social enterprise that Mental Health Swims is today.  How do they create safe & welcoming spaces for people living with mental illness?  Mental Health Swims was created with this in mind. We try to make joining our swim groups a gentle experience. We do this by having wonderful volunteers facilitate the sessions so that you will always receive a friendly welcome.  Our volunteers have all completed our volunteer training which includes cold water safety, mental health awareness, risk assessment and how to create safe and welcoming spaces for people experiencing mental health issues. Lived experience is really important to us. Everyone, including board members, the core team, volunteers and participants have lived experience of mental health issues, either personally or through supporting someone close to us. This means that everyone in our organisation really understands what it is to struggle.  Since we started in 2019 to now, we have trained over 400 volunteers and have a network of groups all across the UK and beyond.  What are you planning for 2024? This is an exciting year for us because we have a new project called "Swim Together" which takes our peer support model indoors. We hope this will make mental health peer support swimming groups more accessible to a wider range of people.  We are thrilled to be working with TrueStart coffee whose beliefs align with ours. LAST SWIM OF 2024: Friday 20th December / 7.30 - 9am / Clevedon Marine Lake  We've been carrying out our Monthly TrueStart Dips for almost two years now and those Friday mornings are some of our very favourites. We bring our truck Sunny to the lakeside car park and hand out free delicious coffees for the brave dippers, bringing along cosy red changing robes for anyone who needs one! But, why do we do it? What are the benefits of cold water swimming? Why do our community come along? Let's dive into exactly why we love our cold water dips for both our minds + our bodies, and we think you would too.. Boosts Your Immune System: Cold water swimming has long been associated with strengthening the immune system. The shock of cold water on the body stimulates the production of white blood cells, which are essential for fighting off infections. Regular exposure to cold water may help make your immune system more resilient, potentially reducing the frequency of colds and other illnesses. Enhances Blood Circulation: The cold water causes blood vessels to constrict, which in turn improves circulation. This increased circulation can benefit overall cardiovascular health, aiding in the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues and organs. It's Magic on Stress & Anxiety: There's something uniquely calming about immersing yourself in cold water. The shock to the system triggers the release of endorphins, the body's natural mood lifters, leading to a sense of euphoria and relaxation, especially after you're out. Cold water swimming has been linked to reduced levels of stress and anxiety and we're here to make you happier & healthier. Improves Your Mental Resilience: Stepping into cold water requires a certain level of mental fortitude. Over time, regular exposure to the discomfort of cold water can help build mental resilience and discipline. Brings You Back to Nature: There's a profound sense of connection that comes from immersing yourself in nature, whether that's woods, mountains parks, or in this case; in bodies of water. Cold water swimming offers an opportunity to disconnect from the hustle & bustle of daily life and reconnect with the natural world. We're incredibly lucky to be able to access a marine lake just 20 minutes outside of the city but any body of cold water outside will have that similar feeling of connection. Whether you're swimming in a lake / river / ocean, dipping in an ice bath or even popping cold shower each immersion becomes a chance to appreciate the beauty of the environment around you. Plus, Andrew Huberman (prof of Neurobiology) notes that if you have a coffee / other source of caffeine, before immersing yourself in cold water your dopamine receptors will increase. In simple terms, you will feel the effects of the "happy hormone" more intensely & for longer and we all love to feel happier! We know cold water dipping may not be for everyone and accessing spots can be tricky depending on where you live & physical ability but perhaps starting with a cold shower will be your gateway. Two years ago, we decided to take an industry-first step in understanding our carbon emissions. From what we could understand, no one had done it before for instant coffee, which is a core product line for us. There was no template to follow, but we’re always up for a challenge! We partnered up with Ecofye - an Earthshot Prize nominated environmental consultancy - to carry out a 3-phase process;   Phase 1 - Calculation Of our scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.  Scope 1 includes all carbon emissions from our direct energy use (gas, fuel), Scope 2 includes all carbon emissions from our indirect energy use (electricity, steam), and Scope 3 includes EVERYTHING ELSE! That could be the amount of carbon created on the rainy days we drive into the office, the amount we use delivering coffee to you, all the way to the paper we use to write you guys welcome notes. This phase was lengthy as it involved a lot of data collection from our supply chain - from farm to cup. Phase 2 - Reduction & Improvements  Asking ourselves with this new knowledge, where could we immediately have an impact? This was where we made a decision to upgrade our instant coffee large tub packaging to fully recyclable aluminium, for example. Carbon emissions are now thoroughly considered as a routine part of our considerations for any product or process decisions (existing and improvements, as well as new).  Phase 3 - Investment In selected social and environmental projects that remove, sequester, avoid and offset 120% of the carbon that we emitted in that previous year. Each year, we re-select these projects. For 2022, we financially supported four Verra-certified projects in the nations from which we buy our coffee; Forestry Project - Colombia 🇨🇴 This one is super special as it’s the heartland for our coffee & where Helena used to live. As a carbon removal project it actually takes CO2 out of the atmosphere & this one supports local farmers, restores biodiversity & improves fresh water supply. It provides financial and technical support to local farmers, enabling them to adopt new, sustainable farming practices.  Hydroelectric Energy Project - Honduras 🇭🇳 This project is carbon avoidance focused, meaning it contributes to climate action by preventing carbon that would otherwise have been released into the atmosphere. It provides renewable energy which in turn reduces dependency on fuel wood, relieving deforestation pressures & improving access to electricity for local communities. Renewable Energy Project - Brazil 🇧🇷 Another carbon avoidance project this has switched the fuel used in a factory from illegal sources to residues. Improving income and working conditions in local communities & avoiding nearly 133,000tons of CO2e. Biomass Power Project - India 🇮🇳 Our final carbon avoidance project uses rice husks from local communities to make electricity, then the money generated provides a First Aid Health Center which provides education and a hand pump to Tada village. Following our 2023 calculations, we are financially supporting two fantastic projects, including continuing support for the Chinchina Watershed project in Colombia, and adding support for: Hydro Power Project - Indonesia (Bengkulu) 🇮🇩 This project has been running since 2006 and generates enough electricity to supply 700,000 Indonesians a week. It has created 50 workplaces in the area and the project re-invests part of the revenue into new income streams for the local community (eg. a new marketplace, farmers benefit from improved infrastructure access land/rice paddies). The project also offers free training for locals on composting and organic fertilisers. It has built a primary school, orphanage and mosque, and has its own reforestation programme. Proudly Becoming Carbon Negative Once we had completed this process, we set about the task of working out the best way to communicate our carbon-conscious approach to our customers! We chose ‘Carbon Negative’, which we were super happy with! It felt simple but accurate - the International Energy Agency states that “becoming carbon negative requires a company, sector or country to remove more CO2 from the atmosphere than it emits” (accurate at the time of writing - March 2024).  By investing in projects that remove, sequester, avoid and offset 120% of the carbon that we emitted in that previous year, this made TrueStart eligible to proudly claim ‘Carbon Negative’ status! We took a lot of time to consider this language, because language is important. We thought about options such as ‘Carbon Neutral’ and ‘Planet Positive’, but felt that they were inaccurate or unclear.  Social Impact In addition to our support of carbon-related environmental and social projects, TrueStart works with Magic Breakfast to provide nutritious, healthy meals to children at risk of hunger across the UK. We also donate coffee to food banks, community centres and Fareshare whenever we can. Finally, we are extremely passionate about improving education - on better health (including neurodiversity awareness) and better business. From working with schools and universities to teach students about ethical and sustainable business, to public speaking on my own personal journey from an ADHD diagnosis aged 7, we believe it is our job to inspire the next generation to make a splash.  Continuous Progress Simon and I have always made decisions that we believe in our hearts are the best decisions for both people and planet.  As a certified B Corp, we’re committed to continuous improvement and progress.  Carbon is complex, and our priorities are to help our customers understand what we do, whilst also fighting against greenwashing. Over the past year, we’ve come to realise that there is some confusion around certain terminology, such as ‘Carbon Negative’, ‘Carbon Neutral’, and what it means to be ‘Net Zero’. It’s also become clear that there are companies out there offsetting destructive, unnecessarily high emissions - emissions around which there is no reduction strategy or thought process in place - in order to claim Carbon Neutral or Carbon Negative status. This is greenwashing. TrueStart is an inherently carbon-conscious company, always looking for ways to do better. This goes back to how Simon and I have always made decisions in the business - for example, using sea and road rather than air-freight to transport both our coffee and packaging. We want to ensure that TrueStart remains crystal clear in our communication, and do not wish to use terminology that could be considered confusing for any of our customers. New Packaging Call Outs - Our Commitment We are currently reviewing the best way to update the ‘Carbon Negative’ claim on our packaging. Whilst it remains technically correct, we want to find an even clearer way to share our approach with our customers and do not want to be associated with confusing terminology. TrueStart will continue to financially support environmental and social projects that remove, sequester and avoid carbon across the world.  This year for the first time, we will be looking for a UK-based biodiversity, forestry or rewilding project to support - one that we feel excited about as a team! This is alongside the continued support of the Chinchina Watershed Forestry & Biodiversity project in Colombia, which is the primary source of our coffee. So how do we best communicate this approach to our customers on our packaging? At the moment, we’re thinking of updating our ‘Carbon Negative Coffee’ stamp to read simply ‘Supports Biodiversity Projects’. This feels very clear and factual, and will be backed up as always by more detailed information here, at truestartcoffee.com. Due to the time and investment required to make these changes across all our products, we will be making the changes one product/range at a time, with a target completion date of December 2025.  We hope to have made a decision on what exactly the packaging update will be by July 2024. You may have noticed that we talk about the "Specialty Coffee Association" in all our descriptions for our Beans & Ground range.  But what is specialty grade coffee and why do you want to drink it? What is specialty grade coffee? Specialty-grade coffee is the highest quality coffee available and can only exist if everyone in the coffee supply chain from farmer down to the roaster is focused on quality. Specialty grade coffee can technically only be "whole bean" coffee however regardless of what TrueStart product you buy, you can be sure it is made with specialty grade beans. The coffee is grown in ideal conditions, ours in Huila in Colombia, with perfect weather and rich soil. Then it is carefully processed and sent to our roastery where the coffee is air-roasted to perfection. The result? Your delicious cup of TrueStart Coffee.  Why should I drink it? 1. Taste This is maybe the most obvious one, coffee that is of higher quality from bean to cup is naturally going to taste better. Think of it like your strawberries from your local farm shop versus supermarket bought ones. 2. Caffeine The quality of the bean itself is better than other grades of coffee - meaning that it produces a more stable caffeine content, something we test for independently too! 3. Health Coffee is naturally super rich in antioxidants - see Helena's blog on that here! Although it's not something that the SCA grades you on, there have been studies to show that the antioxidant content in specialty grade coffee is far superior to non-specialty coffee. 4. Ethics Specialty coffee itself is harvested only when it's perfect, not just when it "has to be" to fill demand for mass consumption and it is traceable whereas commodity grade coffee is not. Furthermore, it gives the farmers better options for their profit as they are connecting with like-minded coffee buyers / brands who are willing to pay more for a better product. 5. Variety The best part? Every coffee growing country produces it's own signature flavour and we offer varieties of specialty grade coffee from the three of top five producing countries; Brazil, Colombia and Vietnam. There's more.. On top of that, we independently lab test all of our coffee to check it's free from mould (mycotoxins) and other nasties and rich in coffee's natural antioxidants.   This January we are going back to our roots and celebrating TrueStart's unrivalled health benefits. Since 2015 we've been crafting delicious healthy coffee and last year we launched the first of it's kind.. a Lightly Caffeinated Instant Coffee! What is Lightly Caffeinated? As with all of our range, it's a super clean coffee made with specialty grade beans, a delicious blend of Colombian & Brazilian coffee that has been independently lab tested to ensure it is packed with antioxidants and minerals.
