Marathon Mindset: The Role of Routine, Recovery and a Really Good Brew 🚀
As the buzz builds for this Sunday’s London Marathon, we’re proud to share a story from one of our incredible ambassadors, Jonathan Escalante-Phillips - a teacher, runner, and first-time marathoner.
Balancing the demands of daily life with a rigorous training plan, Jonathan has spent the last eight months preparing for his biggest running challenge yet.
In this blog, he shares how building consistent routines, finding joy in the process, and starting each day with a cup of TrueStart Coffee have all played a role in helping him get to the start line, energised and ready!

Let's dive in..
Eight months ago, I started building towards a new challenge: my first ever marathon. I’ve been running for 15 years - mostly 5Ks and half marathons - and while high mileage isn’t new to me, the structure and scale of marathon training have brought something different. It’s been about consistency, recovery, and finding routines that stick.
Living in Cambridge and working as a teacher, life is busy. I run-commute to and from school most days, which has helped me get in my training without needing to carve out too much extra time. That rhythm - run, teach, recover - has shaped my days, and having a few non-negotiables in place has made all the difference.
One of those has been coffee. For the last eight months, I’ve been supported by TrueStart, and their Energising Colombian has become a small but important part of my morning routine.
It’s the first thing I reach for before heading out the door, and it genuinely sets me up for the day. I’ve found that one cup gives me the lift I need for both running and teaching - without the afternoon dip or need for a second cup - something that would have been a pretty normal thing for me to do prior to trying TrueStart.
I never set out to make coffee part of my training story, but TrueStart has been there for the early starts, the long weeks, and the quiet focus it takes to keep going. So here’s a quick thank you, for the steady support that’s helped fuel this journey.
With the London Marathon just around the corner, I’m excited. This build-up has reminded me of the power of routine, the value of patience, and the joy of setting a big goal. I haven’t had any huge breakthroughs, but I have also been consistent, and I think that is the most important thing in any marathon build. I’m ready for race day - energised, grateful, and looking forward to seeing the finishing line!
Good luck Jonathan, we know you'll smash it 🚀
