3 cups of coffee could help you live longer, new research shows


There's often mixed messages from the press when it comes to coffee. We believe that coffee and caffeine are really beneficial in moderated quantities (just like carbs, fats and protein!) and a new study has concluded that those who drink about three cups of coffee each day may live longer.

This is great news for many of us - 55 million cups of coffee are drank in the UK every single day!

Data from over 521,330 people over the age of 35, from 10 countries (UK included) has been analysed by researchers from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and Imperial College London, who have been looking at the effects of coffee consumption on risks of death. 

Dr Marc Gunter of the IARC said: "We found that higher coffee consumption was associated with a lower risk of death from any cause, and specifically for circulatory diseases, and digestive diseases."

The results were similar across each of the 10 European countries involved in the study, despite the variation in coffee culture and drinking habits.

Dr Gunter went on to explain that their study "also offers important insights into the possible mechanisms for the beneficial health effects of coffee."

The data analysed came from an earlier European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition. Coffee habits were assessed using questionnaires and surprisingly, the highest coffee consumption by volume was reported in Denmark (900ml per day) with the lowest in Italy (about 92ml per day).

In this study the researchers adjusted the data for changes in lifestyle such as diet and smoking, before finding that compared to those who did not drink coffee, the people who drank the most had a lower risk of death from all causes.

Specifically, Men who drank three of more cups of coffee a day have been shown to be 18% less likely to die from all causes than non-coffee drinkers.

Women drinking the same amount of coffee have been shown to be 8% less likely to die from all causes. 

The study is published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine and the researchers have said that more research is required to discover why exactly the coffee may be linked to a reduced likelihood of death and providing potential health benefits
