Unfortunately, "you only live once" and "life is too short" have become two of the most over-used, under-executed phrases in life. Live for every day with these top tips on how tackle every morning like you mean business.
1. Leave your curtains open
Waking up to natural sunlight is the best. There's no hideous jolt out of deep slumber, caused by a loud alarm going off in the pitch black, leaving us feeling tired and groggy. Instead, you'll wake up gradually and naturally, likely before your alarm (in the summer anyway!) feeling rested, brighter and more alert.
Top tip for the longer nights: invest in a daylight alarm clock. It does the same job as the sunrise, on those mornings where you're up before the sun...
2. Shake up your shower
If you're always in a rush first thing, try to switch your shower habit to the evenings. The average shower lasts 12 minutes (washing time only!) so you can save yourself a decent amount of time here, which means less stress.
If you're dead set on showering in the morning, turn it into an awesome experience. Take two minutes to sit down (yes!) and let the water beat down on your back. It'll leave you feeling massaged and relaxed.
Our biggest shower shake up tip is to turn the temperature right down. You can wash in the warm, but for a good 30 seconds at the end of your shower, let the water run as cold as you can bear. The benefits are endless! It builds massive will power, increases alertness, drains your lymphatic system, clarifies your mind for the day ahead, and improves your skin, hair, circulation and even immunity!
3. Drink a big glass of water
We're huge fans of big water consumption here at TRUESTART HQ. Drink a large glass of water first thing and your body will thank you for it. Water fires up your metabolism, hydrates you, flushes out toxins, fuels your brain, and may even make you eat less.
Top tip to improve digestion and gut health: add a tablespoon of linseeds to a glass of water, cover and leave to soak over night. Drink the entire amount as soon as you wake up, swallowing the seeds whole. They will pass straight through your system without being digested, sending a reassuring, hydrating message to your gut receptors. The seeds introduce lignans and more fibre, soothing whilst gently exfoliating and massaging the lining of the gut as they pass through. You will start to notice bulkier stools and improved bowels after just a few days of drinking this seedy water, and your entire digestive system, liver and gall bladder will all be loving life!
4. Wear something brightly coloured
If there's a sure fire way to show the world you're ready for anything, it's with colours. Take a look around you on the tube. There's so much black and grey, it's no wonder no one is smiling!
According to Jules Standish, author of How Not To Wear Black, there is research that shows that colours can have a psychological effect, triggering neurological responses in the brain, and causing the hypothalamus gland to release hormones.
"Looking at warm, bright colours, such as red or pink, releases dopamine — known as the 'feel-good hormone' — which can improve our mood, heighten the attention span and even boost our sex drive" says Jules. On the other hand, "Cool blues have been linked to the release of oxytocin, making you feel calm."
We're naturally drawn to people who wear happy, bright, vibrant colours which have a way of putting people in a good mood. You can make this work in a professional environment by choosing one stand out piece, or just go all in on a completely crazy outfit, which is guaranteed to cheer up everyone around you!
Remember you can get colourful with your make up, accessories and hair too!
5. Get your heart rate going
Feel happier all day by releasing endorphins first thing with some exercise. It doesn't have to be a full gym session, jumping out of bed and smashing 50 star jumps will get your blood pumping. It also kick starts your metabolism, double win!
6. Stay away from screens
Rather than reaching for your phone before you've even got out of bed, try to stop yourself from looking at a digital screen for as long as you can. Make this part of your morning, maybe you can hold off for 30 minutes whilst you get washed, dressed and eat? The longer the better. This way, your brain will have more space to prepare for the day ahead and you'll be saved from the usual distractions that are probably making you late anyway!
If you can also avoid screens for the 30 minutes before you go to sleep, your brain will benefit even more and you'll wake up feeling more relaxed and ready to have an epic morning.
7. Make your bed
This is an interesting one. Making your bed is a “keystone habit”, which means it leads to the development of multiple good habits. You may start a chain effect that produces a number of positive outcomes, plus your bedroom looks less chaotic so it's definitely worth a few seconds out of your morning!
8. Plan an incredible breakfast
Not only is this something to look forward to and one less thing off your plate (pun intended) to get done in the morning, but planning a delicious and nutritious breakfast ensures your mind and body get some high quality fuel first thing. We love oatvernights which are also a great grab & go option, as well as smoothies (if you're really in a rush, make it the night before in stick it in the fridge), or avocado and eggs on toast. TRUESTART-infused overnight oats are an ace start to the day!
9. Take a moment for incredible coffee
Whether you need a cup of coffee first thing or prefer to wait for a mid-morning boost, take a moment to really enjoy it. Coffee is the largest source of antioxidants in the western diet, and TRUESTART Coffee not only tastes unreal, it ensures you feel incredible all morning without the caffeine crash. Whether you're a fan of premium instant or more of a freshly ground kind of person, it also contains 17 essential minerals so you have every reason to feel great about it. You can really turbo charge your day by adding a teaspoon of coconut oil for some extra long lasting energy.
10. Disrupt your routine
Disruption is the key to relieving boredom. Try walking a different way to work, experimenting with new colours (see point four!), or experiencing something completely new - like a yoga rave!
Sometimes it's easy to forget to smile, especially Ii you've woken up on the wrong side of bed or have a stressful day ahead. However, smiling does more than just communicate how we feel. It has the power to actually influence and improve your mood too! Even fake smiles do the trick, sending all-important happy vibes to your brain! Smiling has also been shown to reduce stress and boost productivity, so get those pearly whites on show!
And remember, smiles are scientifically proven to be contagious, so you may just brighten up someone else's day with yours too.
