A fast growing community of running Mums that started out as a small Facebook group in Bristol has already inspired over 1200 women to get their trainers on and start running.
This Mum Runs has seen phenomenal success since it’s launch in Bristol in 2014 by Mum and lapsed runner, Mel Bound, after she struggled to access traditional running clubs that clashed with kids’ bedtimes. And a serious lack of motivation, energy and self confidence that were a massive barrier to running on her own at the end of a busy day with the kids.
Mel’s focus has been on making running fun and accessible for busy Mums and developing a strong community of women who can find local running buddies plus loads of support and encouragement from women in the same boat.
In less than a year, This Mum Runs has social and training groups in 6 locations around Bristol, a partnership with the National Trust and their own range of This Mum Runs running clothing.
They offer fun and friendly women’s only group runs and running courses for total beginners to aspiring marathoners - all at times that fit around the kids.
This Mum Runs is part of the Sport England This Girl Can Campaign and Mums from the group have taken enjoyed taking part in lots of races this year, from 5ks, to ultra marathons.
From being a lapsed runner, Mel has competed in eight 10k races, a half marathon, her first ever triathlon and featured on Good Morning Britain’s Tough Mudder Challenge.
The next step is a launch in the city of Bath and a national roll out next year, aiming to get 10,000 women running - and enjoying running - by the end of 2016.
Mel said: “I have been totally blown away by the response to This Mum Runs. The community continues to grow every day and there are so many amazing stories of personal achievement and new friendships that have developed.”
“Watching women grow in confidence and self belief, finding some rare head space in their week and achieving things they never thought would be possible is so motivating. I hope that we can inspire the Mums around the world to just take the hardest step – to get their trainers on and out of the front door.”
This Mum Runs Couch to 5k graduate Anneke Van Eijkern said: "This Mum Runs has been life changing for me. I’m fitter, happier, more confident & I’ve got loads of new friends. Three months ago I couldn’t run for a minute, now I can run 10km. I feel like a runner and I never, ever thought I’d say that. Ever!”
